Public Interest
Jacob, Medinger & Finnegan believes the legal profession has a responsibility to the community as a whole. Therefore, JMF encourages its attorneys to participate in public interest and pro bono matters.
The following are some current examples of JMF's work in this area:
JMF partners with Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation "A" to prosecute predatory lending and home sales cases on behalf of low-income purchasers. To date, JMF and Brooklyn "A" have obtained substantial recoveries for victims of unscrupulous lenders and sellers;
JMF defends mortgage foreclosure cases for low-income families and is currently working on such matters with Brooklyn "A" and Queens Legal Services for the Elderly;
JMF successfully prosecuted a Fair Labor Standards Act case against a supermarket chain and obtained class action settlements that provided overtime compensation for supermarket employees;
JMF serves as class action counsel for a class consisting of thousands of plaintiffs who were charged illegal processing fees by a mortgage lender;
A JMF attorney has testified before the New York State Banking Department in support of better regulation of mortgage bankers and brokers in the sub-prime lending market;
JMF attorneys serve as volunteer mediators/arbitrators for matters in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, New York State Supreme Court and New York City Civil Court;
JMF attorneys are adjunct professors and lecturers in universities and law schools;
JMF attorneys serve on the boards of community service organizations, including Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation, the Fund for Modern Courts, the Alliance of Resident Theatres, and the New York Classical Theatre of Harlem.
